TAMPA, Fla.. – The University of Tampa swept Florida Gulf Coast in a softball doubleheader, 5-1 and 9-3, on Sunday afternoon.
Spartans pitcher Nikki Trowell (4-2) threw a pair of complete games for Tampa, allowing one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts in game one, and tossing a five-hitter in the nightcap.
In game one, the Spartans scored four runs in the first three innings to put the game out of reach. Senior right-hander Kelly Powe (Naples, Fla.) started and took the loss for the Eagles. Powe (2-3) allowed five hits and four runs - two earned - with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings of work. Shortstop Kelly Glover keyed a seven-hit Spartans attack with two hits and two RBI.
The Eagles got on the board first in game two. Senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) doubled home Ashley Cecil (Naples, Fla.) and Hillary Johnson scored on a mishandled fly ball by Spartan left fielder Natalie Ippolito for an early 2-0 lead.
Tampa came back to score four runs against FGCU sophomore starter Jessica Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla.) on one hit and two errors to take a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the third the Eagles cut the lead to 4-3 on a two-out RBI single by sophomore first baseman Annie Voyles (Bronson, Fla.).
The Spartans added an insurance run in the fifth and plated four runs in the sixth.
Toleman and Johnson led the Eagles with two hits each.
FGCU, which has dropped five straight, falls to 3-5. The Eagles will host Eckerd College in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
