FGCU Softball Drops Two in Valdosta Tourney
VALDOSTA, GA. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team dropped a pair of games in the first day of the South Region Crossover Tournament hosted by Valdosta State.
In the day’s first game, West Florida overcame a 6-1 deficit to hand Florida Gulf Coast a 7-6 defeat.
After spotting the Argos a run on two errors in the top of the first, FGCU came back with six runs on six hits and three UWF errors, highlighted by a grand slam by sophomore Annie Voyles (Bronson, FL) to take a 6-1 lead. The Argos picked up two runs in the third and two in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5. In the seventh, Natalie Manis had a two-run homer to lift the Argos to the win. UWF reliever Amber Browning held the Eagles to two hits in six scoreless innings of relief for the win.
Senior Kelly Powe (Naples, FL) gave up 11 hits to fall to 4-4. Senior Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL) and junior Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) combined for four of the Eagles eight hits.
In the nightcap, Delta State pitcher Sam St. Hilaire scattered six singles to hand FGCU a 5-1 loss. Junior Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) had two hits to lead the Eagles. Sophomore Jessica Brinkman (Clearwater, FL) took the loss on the mound to fall to 0-2. FGCU was stung by a pair of costly errors.
FGCU, now 5-7, continues tournament play on Saturday with games against Arkansas-Monticello and North Alabama.
