FGCU Softball Splits Two in Valdosta Tourney
VALDOSTA, GA. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team split a pair of games in the second day of the South Region Crossover Tournament hosted by Valdosta State.
FGCU picked up a 7-2 win over the University of Arkansas-Monticello in their first game Saturday. Senior Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL), sophomore Annie Voyles (Bronson, FL) and sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers) had three hits apiece to pace a 13-hit attack for the Eagles (6-7).
The Eagles scored single runs in the first and second before breaking the game open with three runs in the third for a 5-1 lead. Senior Kelly Powe (5-4) pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts to pick up the win.
In the second game of the day, FGCU stranded eight base runners to fall to the University of North Alabama 5-2.
UNA jumped on top 3-0 in the third off Eagles pitcher Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) on a three-run home run by Krystal Hand. UNA added two runs in the fourth before FGCU senior outfielder Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL) blasted her first home run of the season in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-1.
The Eagles (6-8) rallied in the ninth to cut the lead to 5-2 with two runners on with no outs, but could not close the gap. Cecil went 3-for-4 with a stolen base while freshman Alisha Boyd (Naples) was 2-for-2. Bechtoldt drops to 1-1 with the loss.
FGCU concludes the tournament with a 9 a.m. game against host Valdosta State.
