FGCU Splits Doubleheader with Northwood
FORT MYERS – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team split a doubleheader Tuesday evening with Northwood University of Michigan at the FGCU Softball Complex, winning the opener 7-2 before dropping the nightcap 2-0.
In the opener, senior hurler Kelly Powe (Naples) scattered six hits to improve to 6-4. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI double by junior third baseman Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) and added two runs in the third on a RBI single by senior right fielder Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL) and a throwing error.
Northwood cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the fourth but FGCU answered with three runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double by Meyer, and a run in the seventh.
Meyer finished 2-for-3 with the pair of doubles and three RBI to lead the Eagles. Toleman, sophomore first baseman Kate Fishburn and senior centerfielder Ashley Cecil also had two hits each.
In the nightcap, Northwood pitcher Lisa Shepard held FGCU to just three singles while striking out eight in a 2-0 win. Northwood scored both runs in the sixth on a two-out, two-run double by Sam Thacker off Eagles reliever Annie Voyles (Bronson, FL). Junior right-hander Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just four hits in 5 1/3 while striking out five and walking two.
FGCU is back in action when it hosts Mercyhurst of Pennsylvania in a doubleheader tomorrow evening at the FGCU Softball Complex beginning at 5 p.m.
