FGCU Softball Takes Two from Mercyhurst
FORT MYERS – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday night and went on to sweep Mercyhurst College, 4-3 and 10-2, at the FGCU Softball Complex.
In the opener, junior third baseman Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) hit a two-out single to score senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL), who had reached on a one-out single and advance to second on a wild pitch, from second base with the game winner.
Sophomore Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) went 2-for-3 with three RBI to spark the Eagles offense. Senior pitcher Kelly Powe (Naples) pitched a complete-game for her third straight win, improving her record to 7-4.
In the nightcap, FGCU scored five runs in the first inning and two in the second to cruise to its third doubleheader sweep of the spring. Sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers) went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Eagles equaled their season-high of 10 runs. Senior Kristy Ringler (LaBelle, FL) had two hits, including a double, and senior Ashley Cecil (Naples) added a pair of singles for the Eagles, who had 11 hits.
Junior Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) tossed a complete-game two-hitter to even her record at 2-2. Both of the runs off Bechtoldt were unearned.
FGCU (9-9) continues a 12-game homestand at the FGCU Softball Complex with a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State University.
