FGCU Softball Wins In 10th over Saginaw Valley State
FORT MYERS – Senior Blaire Toleman hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning Thursday night as Florida Gulf Coast University rallied for a 2-1 win over Saginaw Valley State University at the FGCU Softball Complex. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader but rain forced the cancellation of game two.
In a pitcher’s duel between Saginaw’s Karen Ray and FGCU’s Kelly Powe, neither team could push across a run in the first nine innings of play. In the top of the 10th inning, the Cardinals took advantage of an error by FGCU third baseman Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) to score Lorelea Rice, who began the inning on second due to the International Tiebreaker rule.
Second baseman Kristy Ringler had a one-out single to score pinch-runner Natasha Sciallis (Naples), who began the inning at second base and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice by Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL). Toleman then followed with the game-winning hit. Ringler had two of the Eagles six hits off Ray, who struck out 11 and walked five.
Senior right-hander Kelly Powe (8-4) won her fourth straight in the circle with a nine-strikeout, one walk complete-game win.
FGCU (10-9) will host the seven-team 2nd Annual Spring Break Invitational at the FGCU Softball Complex from Saturday, March 5 to Tuesday, March 8.
