Powe Leads FGCU To 2 Wins in Invitational
FORT MYERS – Senior right-hander Kelly Powe pitched two complete-game shutouts Saturday to lead the Florida Gulf Coast University softball team to a pair of wins in the 2nd Annual Spring Break Invitational at the FGCU Softball Complex.
Powe (Naples, FL) fired a two-hitter as the Eagles blanked Eckerd College 10-0 in the first game of the night and came back with a three-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Gannon University in the nightcap. Powe (10-4), who has now won six straight decisions, struck out nine and walked one in 12 total innings of work.
In the opener, the Eagles plated eight runs in the first inning and coasted to the 10-0 win, stopped in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule. Senior centerfielder Ashley Cecil (Naples) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead a 10-hit attack. Junior third baseman Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) and sophomore outfielder Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) went 2-for-3 each. Sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers) had two RBI.
FGCU jumped out early in the nightcap against Gannon, scoring three runs in the second and two in the third, and two in the fourth for their fifth straight victory. Senior right fielder Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL) had three hits and two RBI for the Eagles, while Cecil and sophomore Annie Voyles (Bronson, FL) each went 2-for-4. Junior shortstop Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) was 2-for-3.
On Sunday, FGCU (12-9)will play LeMoyne College of New York at 9 a.m. and Grand Valley State University of Michigan at 8 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
