FORT MYERS – Freshman right-hander Sarah Reed tossed a two-hit shutout to lead #18 LeMoyne College to a 3-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast University in the 2nd Annual Spring Break Invitational at the FGCU Softball Complex Sunday morning.
Reed (2-0) allowed just singles to FGCU senior rightfielder Blaire Toleman Powe (Lehigh Acres, FL) and junior third baseman Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) to out-duel Eagles starter Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) and snap the Eagles five-game winning streak.
After being held to one hit through the first four innings, the Dolphins broke the game open with all three runs in the fifth. After a walk and an error put runners on second and third, sophomore Jessica Brinkman (Clearwater, FL) relieved Bechtoldt. LeMoyne's Ashley Anderson greeted Brinkman with a two-run double. Lindsay Spaziani added a one-out double to score Anderson for a 3-0 lead.
Reed shut down FGCU the rest of the way, finishing with four strikeouts and three walks, for LeMoyne (4-1). Bechtoldt (2-3) took the hard-luck loss, allowing just one hit and one earned run in four innings.
FGCU (12-10) will host Grand Valley State at 8 p.m. Sunday night in the final game of the day in the invitational.
