FGCU Softball Rallies Past Grand Valley State 4-3
FORT MYERS – Sophomore Jessica Rouse hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Florida Gulf Coast University a 4-3 win over Grand Valley State University Sunday night in the 2nd Annual Spring Break Invitational at FGCU Softball Complex.
Grand Valley held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh before the Eagles rallied. FGCU sophomore Annie Voyles (Bronson, FL) singled and senior centerfielder Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL) reached on catcher's interference to start the inning. After a strikeout, senior rightfielder Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL) walked to load the bases. Following a strikeout for the second out, Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) came through with the game-winner as the Eagles (13-10) won for the sixth time in seven games.
Senior Kelly Powe (Naples, FL) picked up her seventh straight win to improve to 11-4 in the circle. Powe allowed seven hits and three runs, all unearned, while striking out six without giving up a walk. Cecil was the only repeat hitter for FGCU, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Grand Valley scored first with three runs in the first innings on the strength off three singles and two Powe errors. The Lakers held the 3-0 lead into the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cecil hit a two-out double to score junior shortstop Christine Beck (Hudson, FL), who led off the inning with a single. Senior second baseman Kristy Ringler (LaBelle, FL) followed with a single to score Cecil and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Grand Valley starter Kristin Jenner pitched the first five innings, allowing five hits and two runs. Stephanie Cole took the loss, allowing two hits and two runs in 1 2/3 innings.
FGCU (13-10) returns to action on Sunday, March 13 against Post University at 5 p.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
