FGCU Softball Pulls Out 4-2 Win over Post
FORT MYERS – Florida Gulf Coast University scored four runs in the fifth inning to beat Post University 4-2 Sunday evening at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles (14-10) won for the seventh time in eight games.
Post struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth off Eagles senior right-hander Kelly Powe (Naples, FL) on a RBI single by rightfielder Jennifer Giarratano and an infield error for a 2-0 lead.
But the Eagles answered with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take the lead. Senior rightfielder Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL) smacked a one-out, bases-loaded double to center to score freshman Natasha Sciallis (Naples, FL) and freshman Alisha Boyd (Naples, FL) before Toleman was tagged out at second for the second out. But after sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers, FL) walked, sophomore leftfielder Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) greeted reliever Caitlin McAveney, the third Post pitcher, with a triple to rightfield to score Kristy Ringler (Labelle, FL) and Fishburn for a 4-2 lead.
Toleman, junior third baseman Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) and freshman Alisha Boyd (Naples, FL) had two hits each for FGCU.
Powe (12-4) won her eighth straight decision, surrending three hits, two runs, one earned run while striking out six and not allowing a walk.
Emily Allison (0-2) took the loss for Post in relief of starter Crista Holtom, who threw four scoreless innings.
The Eagles return to action on Monday at the FGCU Softball Complex when they host Winona State of Minnesota in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
