FGCU Softball extends its winning streak to 10 games
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University extended its winning streak to 10 games, by handing Franklin Pierce their first losses of the year; sweeping the doubleheader, 8-0 and 2-0, at the FGCU Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
FGCU had just 12 hits in the two games, but benefited from a pair of strong outings by its starting pitchers.
Senior outfielder Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL) went 2-for-3 with a stand-up triple, her first triple of the year, to lead the Eagles to an 8-0 win in the opener.
Sophomore leftfielder Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Other offensive leaders were senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL) who went 1-1 with a walk while driving in two runs. Both sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers, FL) and freshman Alisha Boyd (Naples, FL) who drove in one run; contributed with a single apiece.
Senior right-hander Kelly Powe (Naples, FL) pitched her 15th complete game of the season. She allowed three hits and walked none while striking out nine before the game was shortened to five innings due to the 8-run mercy rule.
Powe improves to 15-4 of the year while Christine Boutiette of Franklin Pierce picks up her first loss of the year.
In the second game, junior right-hander Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) improved to 5-3, having six hitless innings, before giving up a single through the left side in the seventh inning. Bechtoldt struck out one and walked just two batters in her fourth complete game this spring as the Eagles shut down the Ravens 2-0.
The Eagles scored one run in the first inning, as Toleman, who went 2-for-2, singled up the middle, driving in Cecil who had reached on a Ravens throwing error. In the fifth, the Eagles scored their final run of the game as junior Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) had a lead off double down the leftfield line and later scored on a walk by Fishburn. Rouse chipped in with single through the right side.
Lindsay Knapp (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for Franklin Pierce, giving up just the four hits in the game.
FGCU travels to Ft. Lauderdale to take on Nova Southeastern in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 22. First pitch set for 5:00 p.m.
