FGCU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Nova Southeastern
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.– Florida Gulf Coast University (22-10) stunned Nova Southeastern University (16-17) softball team as they swept both games of the doubleheader at the A.D. Griffin Sports Complex in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The Eagles won the first game 2-1 and took the second game 3-1.
Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers, FL.) continued leading the team in hits as she went 4-for-7 with one run scored, while Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) had her first career back-to-back double as she has reached second base eight times this season.
In the first game, NSU added its only run in its first at-bat as Janette Rodriguez hit a double to right center; she would later score on an Eagles error. Florida Gulf Coast added a run of its own in the top of the second as Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) scored on double to left field by Meyer. The Eagles added another in the top of the seventh as Meyer scored on what would be the game winning single by pinch hitter Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, FL) to seal the game at 2-1.
Senior Kelly Powe (Naples, FL) notched her 16th win of the season, while Laura Cepicky of NSU came away with her fifth loss. Powe pitched seven complete innings allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out nine batters.
In the second game, the Knights found themselves down by two early in the top of the second as the Eagles’ had back-to-back lead off singles by Fishburn and Meyers who would later score on some miscues by the Knights.
In the bottom of the second NSU cut the lead to one as Kristy’ Hice doubled to left field bringing Lindsay Hoffman home from second. Hoffman reached after knocking a double of her own to right center. That would be all for the Knights as the Eagles would score again in the top of the fifth as pinch-runner Leslie Erwin scored on a sac-fly to center field by Myers.
Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL), Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL) and Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) all chipped in with a single a piece.
Powe picked up her 17th win of the season, while Michelle Scales came away with the loss for the Knights. Powe put in four strong innings of work, shutting the Knights down by striking out four and not allowing any hits or runs. Junior Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) started the game for the Eagles before giving way to Powe in the fourth inning.
FGCU will be at home on Friday, March 25 as they play host to Valdosta State. Opening pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m.
