FGCU Softball Splits Doubleheader with Valdosta
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Right-hander Kelly Powe won her 14th straight game as Florida Gulf Coast University split a doubleheader with Valdosta State University on Friday evening at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles won the opener 2-0 behind Powe before dropping the nightcap 7-3.
Powe (18-4), a senior from Naples, tossed her seventh complete game of the season, allowing just two singles while striking out nine without a walk.
The game was scoreless into the fifth before FGCU junior third baseman Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, FL) led off with a double and scored on a RBI single by freshman Alisha Boyd (Naples, FL). The Eagles made it 2-0 in the sixth when sophomore first baseman Kate Fishburn laced a two-out double to right field to score pinch runner Leslie Erwin.
Valdosta State bounced back in the nightcap, taking advantage of four FGCU errors for the 7-3 win. The Blazers scored three runs in the first, one in the second and three more in the third in support of starter Elske ten Hoop (5-8), who scattered nine hits in six innings.
Senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, FL) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI to lead the Eagles (23-11). Meyer, junior shortstop Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) and senior center fielder Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL) added two hits apiece. Junior Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) took the loss in the circle to fall to 5-4.
FGCU travels to Lynn University tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
