BOCA RATON, Fla. – Senior Aimee Murch extended her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 29 in leading the No. 11 Lynn University softball team to 1-0, 5-1 victories over Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday afternoon.
Murch tossed her 12th complete game shutout of the season in the first game before pitching 6.2 scoreless innings in relief in game two for the Knights, who have won 10 straight and improve to 32-5.
The Eagles only managed two base hits in the opener. Sophomore Jessica Rouse had a single in the fourth and senior Ashley Cecil (Naples, FL) had a single in the sixth. FGCU had just two base runners advance into scoring position. The Knights scored the game’s only run on a suicide squeeze bunt in the third inning.
Senior right-hander Kelly Powe (Naples, FL) was the hard-luck loser for FGCU, holding Lynn to just five hits. Powe (18-5) lost for the first time in 15 decisions.
The Eagles touched Knights starter Rachel Foster for a 1-0 lead on one hit and a walk in 1.3 of an inning in the nightcap before Murch came on in relief after Foster suffered a shoulder injury on a throw to second base by the catcher. Murch allowed just two hits and two walks the rest of the way to improve to 22-3 on the season. The Knights scored two in the first, two in the second and one in the third off two Eagles pitchers. Junior Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, IL) allowed four hits and four runs in 1.2 innings to fall to 5-5.
Rouse, junior shortstop Christine Beck (Hudson, FL) and junior third baseman Natasha Meyer each had base hits for FGCU, which lost its third straight to fall to 23-13.
FGCU travels to Barry University on April 2 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
