MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University (24-14) softball team split a doubleheader Saturday against Barry University (25-13)at Buccaneer Field. The Eagles won the opener 8-0, but lost the nightcap 3-1.
In the opener, FGCU (24-14) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added a single run in the third, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh to snap a three-game losing streak. Senior right fielder Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and 3 RBI to pace the Eagles nine-hit attack. Junior third baseman Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, Fla.) added two hits. Senior right-hander Kelly Powe (Naples, Fla.) picked up the win, hurling a three-hit shutout and striking out seven to improve to 19-5.
The Eagles out hit the Buccaneers 7-5 in the nightcap, but Barry pitcher Ramie Garcia improved to 12-4 with the win. FGCU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by sophomore first baseman Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers). Barry answered with two runs in the bottom of the first on three hits. The Bucs added an insurance run in the fourth.
The Eagles had a chance to tie the game in the seventh. Fishburn led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a two-out single by junior shortstop Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.). Sophomore Annie Voyles followed with a single up the middle to load the bases but freshman pinch hitter Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.) grounded out to end the threat.
Both senior center fielder Ashley Cecil and Voyles led the Eagles with two hits each. Voyles (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle, giving up four hits and two runs while walking three in three innings.
FGCU (24-14) begins a 12-game road swing with a doubleheader at Fort Valley State on Monday at 2 p.m.
