FGCU Softball Wins Two at West Georgia
CARROLLTON, GA – Senior pitcher Kelly Powe won both ends of a doubleheader as the Florida Gulf Coast University (30-14) softball team topped West Georgia (19-15) 9-0 and 6-1 in NCAA Division II South Region softball action Wednesday.
In the opener, FGCU jumped on top 1-0 in the first inning on a RBI single by freshman Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers) but West Georgia tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Ryan Cochran off Eagles starter Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, Ill.). After Cochran reached Bechtoldt for a two-out single in the third, Powe (Naples, Fla.) came on in relief. Bechtoldt allowed just the two hits and one run in 2.2 innings.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth when freshman Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.) crushed her first career home run, a three-run shot to right center, to put FGCU ahead 4-1. The Eagles added two insurance runs in the seventh on a RBI double to left center from senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) and a RBI double to center by sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers).
Powe pitched the final 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out two. Fishburn led the Eagles offensively with three hits, while Johnson and junior Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, Fla.) had two hits each.
Powe tossed a three-hit shutout in the nightcap, shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. She scattered three singles and struck out six to improve to 22-5.
The Eagles scored four runs in the first and five more in the second to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) and junior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) had two-run singles in the first. Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) and Boyd had RBI singles in the second while Rouse added a three-run double for the 9-0 lead.
Rouse, 2-for-5 with a career-high 5 RBI, was the only repeat hitter for FGCU.
The Eagles play a doubleheader at North Alabama on Thursday at 1 p.m.
