FGCU Softball Splits Doubleheader with North Alabama
FLORENCE, Ala. – Senior pitcher Kelly Powe tossed a four-hit shutout and senior Blaire Toleman belted a grand slam as Florida Gulf Coast University split a softball doubleheader with North Alabama Friday afternoon, with the Eagles winning the opener 5-0 before dropping a 2-1 decision in the nightcap.
FGCU staked Powe (Naples, Fla.) to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when junior Natasha Meyer (Coral Springs, Fla.) singled home Ashley Cecil (Naples, Fla.), who had reached on a three-base throwing error by UNA pitcher Sabrina Roberts. Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) crushed her fourth home run of the year in the seventh to make it 5-0.
Powe (24-6) walked two, struck out one, and did not allow a Lions base runner to advance to third base. Meyer had two of the Eagles six hits off Roberts (8-6).
Junior Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, Ill.) and Powe combined to hold UNA to five hits in the nightcap but Lions pitcher Stephanie Elliott (5-2) held the Eagles to just four hits and one run.
UNA reached Bechtoldt (7-6) for one run a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a solo home run by Nicole Martinez to lead off the second. The Eagles tallied one run in the third as Toleman doubled home Cecil to make it 2-1. Cecil, who went 3-for-3 with a double, was the only Eagle to reach base in the final four innings.
FGCU is now 31-15 while North Alabama is 22-11. The Eagles will travel to Alabama-Huntsville for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CST.
