FGCU Softball Posts Back-to-Back Shutouts of Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University softball pitchers Kelly Powe and Amanda Bechtoldt combined to toss 14 shutouts innings Friday night to lead the Eagles to a sweep of Eckerd College, 6-0 and 10-0, at Turley Field. Powe (Naples, Fla.) pitched a seven inning, complete game two-hitter in the opener. She allowed just two singles and struck out four batters to post her 10th shutout this season and 25th of her career. Powe (25-6) came back to combine on a three-hitter with junior Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, Ill.) in the nightcap. Powe gave up one hit in three innings before giving way to Bechtoldt (9-6), who held the Tritons to two hits over the final four innings. FGCU was opportunistic in both games, scoring six runs on nine hits in the opener. The Eagles scored twice in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI – including her school record sixth homer, while senior Ashley Cecil (Naples, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Sophomore Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) also had two hits, including a double. The Eagles scored seven runs on eight hits in the nightcap, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single from Toleman and a two-run home run by Kate Fishburn. They added three unearned runs in the third and their final run in the fourth on a RBI triple by Rouse. Toleman’s RBI was her 53th, a single-season record at FGCU. Cecil, Toleman and Rouse had two hits apiece for the Eagles (35-16), who beat the Tritons for the fifth straight time. Eckerd is now 5-34. FGCU will play a doubleheader at Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday night at 5 p.m.
