FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team split a doubleheader with Nova Southeastern University Tuesday night in NCAA Division II South Region softball action at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles came back to win the second game 5-2 after dropping the first game 4-1. The Knights took an early lead in the first game, picking up a run on a sacrifice fly by Janette Rodriguez to score Diana Goolsby, who had tripled. The Eagles countered with a run in the bottom of the first. Senior Ashley Cecil (Naples, Fla.) led off with a single, and then stole second and third, scoring on a throwing error by catcher Jennifer Koffman. NSU went back on top 2-1 in the third inning on the strength of two hits and a pair of infield errors. NSU pitcher Laura Cepicky and FGCU starter Kelly Powe (Naples, Fla.) settled into a pitcher’s dual, with neither team threatening until the seventh. The Knights once again took advantage of an infield miscue to increase the lead to 4-1. Cepicky (13-9) held the Eagles to three hits while striking out 10. Powe (26-7) gave up eight hits, four runs, and only two earned runs in seven innings. Junior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) had a double for the Eagles. NSU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the nightcap. But the Eagles scored three times in the third inning on a RBI single up the middle by sophomore Kate Fishburn (Fort Myers) and two-run triple to left field by sophomore Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.). They added two insurance runs in the fourth inning to earn the split. Senior Kristy Ringler (Labelle, Fla.) and senior Blaire Toleman (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) had RBIs. Powe (27-7) picked up the win in relief of junior right-hander Amanda Bechtoldt (New Baden, Ill.), who allowed three hits and two runs in 1.2 innings. Powe allowed three hits and struck out six over the final 5.1 innings. Shannon Lynch (8-13) took the loss for the Knights. Cecil went 2-for-4 with a double and triple for the Eagles. Ringler went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored while Fishburn went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Jessica Reader and Leah Shoats led NSU (21-27) with two hits each. FGCU (37-17) will host North Florida in the season finale on Senior Night at the FGCU Softball Complex on Friday. The first game of the twin bill begins at 5 p.m. Four seniors - Ashley Cecil, Kelly Powe, Kristy Ringler and Blaire Toleman – will be recognized between games of the doubleheader.
