FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University’s Ashley Cecil and Kelly Powe have been named to the Louisville Slugger / National Fast Pitch Coaches Association Division II All-South Region softball team. Cecil was a first-team outfield selection while Powe was named to the second team as a pitcher.
“The recognition is well deserved because both of them have performed incredibly well,” said FGCU coach Dave Deiros. “This is especially gratifying because the voters are coaches from opposing teams in the region and appreciate what these two can do on the field.”
Cecil and Powe, both Naples residents, are making the first appearances on the NFCA All-Region teams by FGCU players in the softball program’s three-year history. As one of 14 players selected to the first-team, Cecil is now eligible for All-America honors.
A senior center fielder, Cecil started all 56 games and led the Eagles with a .408 average, 57 runs scored and 73 hits. She was also the NCAA Division II leader in stolen bases with 66, including tying an NCAA single-game record with six stolen bases in a game at Clark Atlanta. Cecil holds single season and career records at FGCU in batting average, runs, hits and stolen bases.
Powe, a senior right-hander, finished the year with a 28-8 record with a 1.08 ERA in the circle, setting a new FGCU single-season record for wins. She ranked among the top pitchers in NCAA Division II for wins. Powe finished the season with 12 shutouts and recorded 206 strikeouts in 234 1/3 innings. She now holds every significant pitching record at FGCU.
“Our success depended on the performance of these two incredible players,” said Deiros. “We had a chance to win every game in which Kelly was in the circle. She made our team better defensively with her ability to keep hitters off-balance and was a fantastic defensive player in her own right. Ashley was not only the best position player on our team, she was the best position player on the field in every game we played. She could take over a game with her defense, bat and speed.”
