Fort Myers, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team won a doubleheader against Northwood University at the FGCU Softball Complex Friday night. The Eagles pick up their first two wins of the season, defeating the Seahawks 2-1 in game one and 8-3 in game two. FGCU improves its record to 2-2, while the Seahawks dropped to 0-4. In game one, FGCU got to work quickly with junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla) drilling a two-run homer through left field, her first of the season. Junior Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla) scored off the Rouse homerun after stealing third. The Rouse homerun was all the offense the Eagles needed. Sophomore pitcher Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla) gave a dominant performance from the circle. Edinger pitched all seven innings giving up only three hits and one earned run, while striking out eight of the Seahawks. Edinger picks up her first win of the season, improving to 1-1. In game two, the Eagles were lead offensively by sophomore Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla) who went three for four with four RBI. Jenks started early with a base-clearing triple in the second. Juniors Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla) and Rachael Homan (Vero Beach, Fla) added to the Eagles potent offense. Junior pitcher Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, Ill) made her first start of the season and earned a win pitching all seven innings. Backe only allowed one earned run, while striking out ten Seahawks, improving her record to 1-0. The Eagles will host #20 St Leo in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.
