Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team won a doubleheader at Nova Southeastern Tuesday evening. The Eagles now (8-3) defeated the Sharks (6-4) 8-3 in game one and 7-6 in game two. In game one, Nova struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Eagles offense gained a spark in the fourth with a lead off double from junior Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, Fla.). Three batters later, that offensive spark was ignited by a three-run blast by junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.), her third homerun of the season. The Eagles were able to manufacture five more runs through the rest of the game to give sophomore pitcher Rachel Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) her third win of the season. In game two, the game remained scoreless until the top of the third. The Eagles scored four runs with Rouse leading the charge with a triple and two RBI. Senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) and junior Amanda Deen (Jacksonville, Fla.) each added an RBI. The Nova Sharks answered the FGCU offensive flurry in the fourth with four runs of their own. Both teams went back and forth, until the sixth inning. With the game tied at six apiece, freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) doubled to left, driving in freshman Paige Raulerson (Labelle, Fla.) from third for the winning run. Freshman Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up the win in relief of freshman Melissa Geissler (Fort Myers, Fla.), who battled in the circle for four and two thirds innings. Junior Sarah Backe (Flossmor, Ill.) picked up the save. The FGCU offense really came alive against NSU. The star of the night was junior Jessica Rouse, who ended the evening six for seven, one homerun, six RBI, and five runs scored. “It was great to see our hitting finally come around,” said Eagles head coach Dave Deiros. “Rouse was certainly in a zone last night. Once we get all three phases of the game to come together, we’ll be that much better.” The Eagles will now host the FGCU Invitational Tournament at the FGCU Softball Complex this Friday through Sunday. FGCU will face Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday at 5 p.m.
