Softball Wins the FGCU Invitational

Fort Myers, Fla- The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team defeated nationally ranked #6 LeMoyne 1-0 and Palm Beach Atlantic 5-0 Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex to win the FGCU Invitational Tournament. FGCU (14-3 overall, 7-3 South Region) will play Mercyhurst at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at the FGCU Softball Complex. In game one, FGCU saw an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Melissa Geissler (Fort Myers, Fla.). Geissler allowed LeMoyne only one hit and hurled seven strikeouts through five innings of work, improving her record to four and one. Sophomore Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla) stepped into the circle in the sixth to finish off the Dolphins of LeMoyne, earning her first save. Edinger also held the Dolphins scoreless through the final two innings, while striking out five batters. Edinger struck out a total of 25 batters in 16 innings for the tournament. Sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla) drove in senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla) in the fourth inning to provide the Eagles only score. Juniors Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, Fla) and Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla) each had doubles. In game two, junior Amanda Deen (Jacksonville, Fla) pitched well and earned her first win. Deen struck out three Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish and didn’t give up any hits. Freshman Dana Frantz (Brighton, MI) entered the circle in the fifth inning to finish off the Sailfish, and earned her first save. The Eagle offense ran smoothly with freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla) and sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) hitting a pair of doubles. Beck and Homan also hit a double each, while Homan also picked up a pair of stolen bases. Sophomore Lauren Barraco (North Fort Myers, Fla) and Hillary Johnson each stole a base, their first of the season. Homan leads the Eagles with 10 stolen bases on 10 attempts.
