Softball Team Splits Doubleheader with Gannon

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team split a doubleheader Thursday night against Gannon (PA) University in first day action of the Spring Break Invitational at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles won the opener 5-0, but lost the nightcap 7-0. FGCU (17-4) had a 12-game winning streak snapped in the nightcap. Gannon (9-1) had its season-opening eight-game win streak stopped in the opener. In the first game, sophomore Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) tossed a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Eagles to the win. Edinger (7-2) struck out five and walked two while winning her fifth consecutive start. FGCU provided her with all the offense they would need in the first inning. A RBI groundout by shortstop Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) made it 1-0 before sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) belted a grand slam, her first homerun of the year, for the 5-0 lead. Freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) added a pair of hits for FGCU. In the nightcap, Golden Knights junior left hander Jenn Kulick held the Eagles to three hits over six innings, allowing just two base runners to reach scoring position. Kulick struck out four and walked two. Junior center fielder Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) had a first inning double while Jenks and sophomore Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) each had a single for the Eagles. Gannon broke open a 1-0 game in the sixth with a five-run outburst on five hits and two walks off Eagles freshman hurler Melissa Geissler (Fort Myers, Fla.) Geissler (4-2) pitched six innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs. The two teams meet Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the first game of day two of the invitational. The Eagles will also host Saginaw Valley State at 8 p.m. in the day’s final game.
