Eagles Defeat Cardinals In Second Match-up 7-0

Fort Myers, Fla.- The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team headed into day four of the FGCU Spring Break Tournament versus Saginaw Valley State. Last night they defeated Saginaw 7-0 and today repeated again a victory score of 7-0 over the Cardinals. SVS held off FGCU to 0-0 until the fourth inning when first baseman Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, FL ) stepped up to bat and hit a homerun, giving the Eagles their first run on the board. In the fifth inning the Eagles landed five runners to home base starting with sophomore second baseman Alisha Boyd (Naples, FL) on base from a walk. Boyd was brought home by junior outfielder Rachael Homan (Vero Beach, FL) who hit a double to left field. Freshman third baseman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, FL) got a walk to first base, while Homan stole third. With two on base junior out-fielder Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, FL) stepped up and hit a home run allowing Jenks and Homan to score. Johnson doubled to center field and sophomore Christa Piquette (Barrington, RI) came in to pinch run for her on second base. Piquette was brought home by junior catcher Roz Tyre (Lake City, FL ) who doubled to left field. The Eagles ended the fifth up 6-0. In the bottom of the sixth the Eagles scored one more run starting with Homan hitting a single to center field and reaching second on an error by the Cardinals center-fielder. Next up to bat, Jenks was walked. Homan scored off of a double to left field hit by Rouse, ending the inning 7-0. SVS was unable to score in the top of the seventh with the Eagles causing three quick outs for the Cardinals with a ground out, fly out to center field and a strike. The Eagles were led at the mound by sophomore pitcher Rachael Edinger(9-2)from Lakeland, FL. Edinger pitched all seven innings with 13 strikeouts, four runs and no hits. The Eagles are now 20-4 and will take on Grand Valley State University tonight for the first time in tournament play.
