Eagles End Spring Break Tourney With 2 Wins

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team rounded out their last day of their FGCU Spring Break Tournament with a doubleheader victory over Newberry University. The Eagles defeated Newberry in both games 3-0 bringing their overall record to 25-4 and their final tournament play record to 9-1. In game one the Eagles were led in the circle by sophomore pitcher Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.). Edinger (11-2) pitched seven innings with seven strikeouts, allowing four hits and no runs. The Eagles scored their first run in the top of the third inning. Junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) lead off with a double to left field. Sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) drew a walk, moving Rouse to second. Junior catcher Roz Tyre (Lake City, Fla.) hit a double to left field bringing home Rouse. In the top of the seventh inning the Eagles scored two more runs. Freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla.) hit double to center field. Junior first baseman Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, FL) reached on a two-base error by Newberry’s shortstop while McDowell scored on the throw. Sophomore Christa Piquette (Barrington, RI) came in the game to pinch run for Johnson. Sophomore second baseman Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.) tehn hit a single to center field scoring Piquette ending the rally. In game two the winning pitcher for the Eagles was freshman Dana Frantz (Brighton, MI). Frantz pitched seven innings with seven strikeouts, five hits and no runs to improve to 3-0. The Eagles scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Lauren Barraco (North Fort Myers, Fla.) hit a double to center field. Tyre was next at bat and hit a single past the Hawks pitcher. Freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) hit a single to right center field allowing Barraco to cross home plate. Senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) stepped up the plate with two runners on and hit a single to right center field scoring Jenks and Homan ending the game 3-0. The Eagles will play a pair of games on Friday, March 11. They will face Saint Joseph's at 5 p.m. and Saint Anslem at 7 p.m.
