FGCU Softball Ranked 17th in NFCA National Poll
Wednesday, March 08, 2006
Fort Myers, Fla. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced today that Florida Gulf Coast University team is now ranked 17th in the national Division II Top 25 Poll. The poll is voted on by eight NCAA Division II head coaches representing the eight NCAA regions. This is the first time in school history that the young program has been nationally ranked. "We are on our second 12-game winning streak of the season and have won 24 of the last 25.” Commented Head Eagle Coach David Deiros. “We are clicking in all three phases of our game. Our pitching has been spectacular all year, but if we run into a problem in the circle, the bats have come alive to pick them up or we make a spectacular defensive play to get us out of the jam. The key stat in my mind is that we have recorded shutouts in 14 of those 25 games and have scored scored first in 22 of those 25 games.” The Eagles are being lead at bat so far this season by junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) who leads the team in home runs and RBI’s. Sophomore Rachel Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) is leading pitcher for the Eagles. She has a (9-2) record for FGCU. Emporia State is currently ranked number one with an 18-1 record and regional opponent Florida Southern stands in the third spot undefeated at 14-0. The Eagles host St. Joseph's (IN) and St. Anselm this Friday March 10th starting at 5:00 pm at the FGCU softball complex.
