No. 17 Eagle Softball Beats Pumas 3-2
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team defeated the Saint Joseph Pumas (8-5) 3-2.
The Eagles are currently ranked number 17 in the nation in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll and now have a 26-4 overall record.
The Eagles started off scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior outfielder Rachel Homan hit a double to left field. Homan stole third and was brought home by freshman third-basemen Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) who hit a single to center field. Jenks breezed past the Pumas stealing second. Senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) made it to first on a dropped third strike and an error by the first baseman for St. Joseph’s. Next up to bat was junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) who hit a fielder’s choice with Puma’s getting out Jenks at third. Sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) hit a single to left field bringing home Beck giving the Eagles the two run lead.
The Pumas scored their two runs in the top of the fifth with senior Jill Kapitan (Dryer, IN) making it to first on single to right field. Freshman Nicole Enright (Hammond, IN) came in to pinch run for Kapitan. Freshman Cheryl Zakowski hit a double to left field and was brought home along with Enright by sophomore Danielle Austin (Farmersburg, IN) on a single to right field.
With a tied score of 2-2 the Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the sixth with Hillary Johnson leading off hitting a single to left field. Freshman Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) came in to pinch run for Johnson at first. Junior catcher Roz Tyre (Lake City, Fla.) hit a double to left field scoring Frantz.
Winning pitcher was Eagle sophomore Rachel Edinger (12-2) who went all seven innings with seven strikeouts, five hits and two runs. Saint Joseph’s pitcher senior Ashley Heatwole (Mooresville, IN) took the loss with five strikeouts, seven hits and three runs
