Fort Myers, Fla. – The No. 17 Florida Gulf Coast University softball team won a doubleheader against Winona State University at the FGCU Softball Complex Monday night. The Eagles have now won 12 straight games to improve to 29-4. The Warriors fell to the Eagles 7-0 in game one and 6-1 in game two. "We knew going in that our success tonight would depend on outperforming a potent offense from the #22 team in the country,” said FGCU Head Coach David Deiros. “Our kids were outstanding in the discipline and effectiveness in each of their at-bats, as a result, we were able to get ahead early and pad our lead every inning.” FGCU had a great start in the first inning of game one. Junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) homered to center field giving the Eagles the 1-0 lead. In the third inning the Eagles landed three runs starting with a triple to center field by Rouse scoring freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.), who was on base from a double. Next to score was Rouse, who was brought home by freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla.) who hit a single to center field. Junior Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) scored sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) on a single to shortstop. The Eagles ended the inning up 4-0. In the fourth inning the Eagles scored two runs off of another home run by Rouse, her second of the game, bringing home senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) who hit a single. One more run was scored by the Eagles in the fifth. Junior Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error by the Warriors catcher. Jenks followed with a single to centerfield to score Homan with the seventh run. In game two the Eagles flew out in the first inning to a 3-0 lead. Jenks led off for the Eagles and was walked by Winona State pitcher Kristen Fossell (Oak Creek, WI). Beck hit a single and made it to second on a steal. Rouse also walked to load the bases. McDowell scored Jenks and Beck and Rouse made it to home plate on an error by the Warriors short stop. In the second inning Eagle Lauren Barraco (North Fort Myers, Fla.) led off and was walked. She was sacrificed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jenks and slid into third on a wild pitch. Barraco made it home scoring the one run of the inning on an error. In the third inning the Eagles scored another run as McDowell hit a triple and was brought home by Natasha Johnson. The Warriors scored a run in top of the fourth inning when senior Kristin Noble (Frankfort, IL) was walked and two outs later were brought home by freshman Terra Halron’s (Green Bay, WI) single. Natasha Johnson scored one more run for the Eagles in the fifth inning with a homerun to center field putting the final score at 6-1. Junior pitcher Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, IL) led the Eagles from the mound in game one, striking out four Warriors and walking three. Backe now moves to 5-0 with 30 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched so far this season. In game two, pitcher (13-2) Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) struck out eight Warriors allowing only six hits and no runs. Edinger leads the Eagles in strikeouts this season with 130.
