Eagles Pick Up Two More Wins Versus Rollins

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team swept a doubleheader over Rollins College Saturday. In game one, the Eagles went 14 innings with the Tars to take the victory 7-6. The Eagles took game two 5-0 to improve to 52-4 on the year. FGCU has now won 35 games in a row. Sophomore Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) pitched the first game for FGCU. Edinger pitched a complete game to boost her record to 21-2 this season. She struck out ten batters while only allowing 12 hits in the 14 innings. Rollins put two runs on the board in the first inning to jump out to the early lead. Tars juniors Stacy Sanders (Orlando, Fla.) and Amanda DeFilippo (Winter Springs, Fla.) both hit singles to left field to put the two runs on the board. The Eagles answered back in the top of the third with three runs scored starting off with sophomore Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.) hitting a double to right field. Next up to bat, junior Natasha Johnson (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) hit a sacrifice bunt allowing Boyd to get to third. Freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) reached on an error by left field bringing home Boyd. Senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) brought home Jenks on a single to center field. For the third run Beck scored off of a reach on a passed ball by junior catcher Roz Tyre (Lake City, Fla.). The Tars scored a single run in the fourth inning to tie the game. Senior Kelly Cruz (Winter Springs, Fla.) doubled to center field, scoring junior Devon Kontos (Orlando, Fla.) from second. In the eleventh inning the teams matched a run a piece to keep the game tied. The Eagles struck first in the top of the inning with Beck as the international tie breaker runner on second. She was brought home by Tyre who hit a sacrifice fly out to left field. Tars, Jen Olsen (Winter Haven, Fla.) hit a single up the middle to bring home freshman Ashley East (Pace, Fla.) who was placed on second. In the top of the thirteenth inning the Eagles took a three run lead over the Tars. Beck was the tie breaker runner placed on second. Home run hitter junior Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) was intentionally walked. Sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) reached on a fielder’s choice for a sacrifice bunt. Tyre then stepped up and hit a double to center field bringing home Rouse and Beck. Freshman Rachel Holloway (Bokeelia, Fla.) entered the game as a pinch runner for Johnson. Freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly out to left field getting Holloway home. The Tars tried to match the Eagles three runs but were only able to score two ending the game. Kontos placed on second. Cruz doubled to center field giving Kontos the chance to score and Olsen scored off of a passed ball. In game two, the game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Eagles banked four runs. Beck reached on an error to lead off the Eagles making it to second. Hillary Johnson hit a double down the right field line bringing home Beck. Johnson made it to third on a passed ball and was brought home by McDowell who reached on an error by the Tars first baseman. McDowell then caught an even better break and stole second. Natasha Johnson then hit a home run collecting two RBI’s bringing home McDowell. This was her third homerun of the season and 29th RBI. The Eagles scored one more run in the top of the sixth. Hillary Johnson hit a single to left field and sophomore Christa Piquette (Barrington, RI) came in to pinch run for her. Piquette was brought home by McDowell who hit a single to right field getting her 26th RBI of the season. Game two was lead by winning pitcher junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, IL). Backe picked up her 10th win of the season and is unbeaten. She pitched the game with two strikeouts and seven hits. The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team travels to Miami Shores, Fla. Monday for a doubleheader against South Region opponent No. 8 Barry University. Game one starts at 5:00 pm.
