The Eagles came up on the losing end of a great pitching duel in game one, losing 1-0. In game two, FGCU bounced back to win by a score of 3-1. The Eagles are now 53-5. Sophomore ace Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) pitched game one for FGCU. Edinger struck out six Barry batters only giving up three hits and one earned run. With the loss, Edinger drops to 22-3 on the year. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning. With two down, Barry’s Shyla Rider hit a solo shot over the right field wall. The homerun proved to be the game winner as neither team would score the rest of the game. Only four Eagles batters had hits in the first game. Sophomore Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) recorded two hits while junior Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) and freshman LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla.) each added one. The Eagles offense woke up in the second game as they scored three runs on nine hits. Junior Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, Illinois) started game two for FGCU. She pitched three and two thirds innings only allowing one run on four hits. Edinger came into the game in relief in the fourth inning to finish the game and pick up the win for the Eagles. FGCU jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Homan and senior Christine Beck (Hudson, Fla.) both singled to start things for the Eagles. A groundout by freshman Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) moved both runners over. Clean-up hitter Hillary Johnson singled to right field scoring Homan from third. With Beck on third, junior Roz Tyre (Lake City, Fla.) singled to left, scoring the second run of the game. Barry fought back in the bottom half of the inning. The Buccaneers scored a run when Shyla Rider scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Kim Fujimoto. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore Alicia Boyd (Naples, Fla.) led off the inning with a double to left. Sophomore Lauren Barraco (North Fort Myers, Fla.) moved Boyd to third with a sacrifice bunt down the third base line. Homan stepped in and hit an RBI single to left center scoring Boyd. The Eagles 3-1 lead would hold up the rest of the game as FGCU picked up a big win against the South Region top-ranked team. Homan and Beck both went two for four in the game and five other Eagle batters added a hit in the nightcap. Homan, Tyre, and Hillary Johnson all picked up an RBI for FGCU. The Eagles travel to Melbourne, Fla. tomorrow to take on Florida Tech in another doubleheader at 5:00 p.m.
