MELBOURNE, Fla., – The FGCU softball team split a double header with Florida Tech Tuesday afternoon. Both teams move to 3-1 on the year. FGCU took game one 6-1 while dropping their first game of the year 4-0.
In the first game, the Eagles scored a pair of runs in the first inning as Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) came home on a throwing error by Florida Tech. Later in the inning, Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) drove in Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.), who reached on a walk. The two runs would prove to be all FGCU starting pitcher Rachel Edinger (Lakeland, Fla) needed as she picked up her second win of the year. Edinger allowed five hits, one run and a pair of walks while fanning 13 in the 6-1 win. Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homerun.
In the second game, Florida Tech was the team to take an early 2-0 lead, crossing home twice in the first inning. The first run came courtesy of leadoff batter Laura Chisena who reached on a walk, and scored on a Katie Naumoff single. The Panthers tacked on a third run in the second and added an insurance run in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles nearly mounted a comeback in the seventh as Paez doubled and Hillary Johnson (Fort Myers, Fla.) singled to give the Eagles runners at first and third with one out. However the next two batters were retired to end the game. Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up the loss after going 5.0 innings. The Eagles were limited to four hits by Panthers starter Amber West.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday at 2:00 pm when they host Northwood in their home opener at 2:00 pm at the FGCU Softball Complex.
