Softball Sweeps Northwood to Improve to 5-1
FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU softball team improved to 5-1 after sweeping Northwood with wins of 7-0 and 7-1. Northwood fell to 0-4 with the losses.
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 as Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) drew off a walk in the bottom of the first and advanced on a wild pitch. Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) followed with a single and both Eagles scored later in the inning after an error. Those proved to be the only needed runs, but the Eagles continued to tack on runs.
In the second, with two outs, Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.) reached on an error and Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) walked before Rouse hit a three-run homer to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead. FGCU added single runs in the third and fifth innings.
Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up the win, allowing one hit while striking out five batters. Rouse scored a pair of runs including her three-run blast.
In the second game, the Eagles again plated a pair of runs in the first following a Northwood error. Jenks reached on the error before Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) hit the Eagles second homer of the day. In the third, Paez reached on an error and scored when Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, Fla.) ripped a linedrive down the left field line. Later in the inning, McDowell homered to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead. FGCU again tacked on funs in the fourth and sixth innings to take game two 7-1.
Sarah Backe (Flossmoor, Ill.) picked up the win for the Eagles, going 4.0 innings and allowing one run. Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) came in to pitch three scoreless innings for the Eagles.
Paez went 2-for-3 in game two with two runs scored and added three RBI in the game. McDowell wnet 1-for-4 and had a pair of RBI off her homer.
The Eagles will be in action again tomorrow afternoon when they face St. Leo at 2:00 pm at the FGCU Softball complex.
