FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU softball team improved to 7-1 with a sweep of St. Leo in Sunday’s doubleheader. The Eagles took game one 3-1 and followed with a 3-0 win in the second game. St. Leo falls to 1-5 with the losses. After Rachel Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) worked around an error in the top of the first, Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) put the Eagles on the board with a three-run shot in the bottom of the first. That would be all Edinger would need to guide the Eagles to their third straight win. Pitching was the story in game one as both hurlers went the distance, each striking out nine batters. Edinger picked up the win for the Eagles and moved to 3-0 on the year. Ashley Urbanik suffered the loss for St. Leo, allowing six hits in 6.0 innings. Miller’s three-run homer wrapped up the scoring for the Eagles. Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.), Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.), Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, Fla.) and Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) each added hits for the Eagles. Game two saw the Eagles plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Gary singled up the middle with one out and stole second later in the inning. She came home on an error that scored the first run of the game. Rouse doubled later in the frame to score Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) to give FGCU a 2-0 lead. The Eagles tacked on an insurance run in the fourth as Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) led off with a single. Christa Piquette (Barrington, R.I.) pinch ran for Paez and scored on a groundout to the shortstop to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Starter Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) went the distance, scattering five hits while striking out six batters to move to 3-1 on the year for FGCU. Kiki VonHolt received the loss, allowing five hits and three runs, only one of which was earned. The Eagles will be in action again on Friday at 10:00 am when they face Florida Tech in the Barry Tournament.
