Softball Splits on Day One of Barry Tournament

MIAMI SHORES, Fla., - The FGCU Softball team split a pair of games on the first day of the Barry Tournament. FGCU beat Florida Tech 1-0 in the first game and fell to Valdosta State 3-1 in the second game. Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) picked up her fourth win of the year with a four-hit performance that saw her fan five batters. Edinger is now 4-0 on the year. Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) accounted for all of the scoring in the game when she hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Paez went 2-for-3 in game one for the Eagles. Natasha Johnson (Fort Pierce, Fla.) added a pair of hits for the Eagles. Against Valdosta State, the Blazers scored in the top of the second inning after a lead off walk by Amy Gaiss. Gaiss scored later in the inning when Rebecca Aszman singled to score the first run of the game. In the fourth inning, Gaiss again sparked the Blazer offense with a single. VSU added three more singles in the inning to take a 3-0 lead. FGCU responded in the bottom of the fifth when Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) drove home Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.). Gary reached on an error and stole second before Homan drove in the Eagles only run of the game. Dana Frantz picked up the loss, falling to 3-2 on the year. Homan and Paez each went 1-for-3 for FGCU while Gary was 1-for-2 in the game. The Eagles will be in action again tomorrow in the tournament when they face West Florida at 2:00 pm and Lynn at 7:00 pm.
