FORT MYERS, Fla., - The Florida Gulf Coast University softball team got their 21st win with a 3-0 shutout of Mercyhurst on Saturday evening.
FGCU jumped on the Lakers early, as Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) singled and stole second to start the Eagles off. Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) drove in Jenks and Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) who reached on a walk. That would prove to be all the Eagles needed as Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) limited Mercyhurst to three hits on the evening. The Eagles tacked on one more run in the fourth with a Jenks single that scored Christa Piquette (Barrington, R.I.).
Jenks went 2-for-3 again for the Eagles as did Miller. Piquette added the only other hit for FGCU. Frantz improved to 10-3 with the win. Mercyhurst’s Erin Ratajczak was 2-for-2 for the Lakers.
The Eagles will be in action again tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 pm when they face #13 CW Post. FGCU concludes the 2007 Spring Break Tournament with a 2:00 pm game against Saginaw Valley State.
