FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU softball team posted a 5-1 record in the 2007 FGCU Spring Break Tournament with a 10-5 win over #13 CW Post and a 2-0 win over Saginaw Valley State in the final day of the event. FGCU is now 23-3 on the year. In the game against CW Post, the visitors got on the board first after Kelsey Cooley singled and Jill Fisher doubled to bring home the first run. FGCU answered with five runs in the bottom of the first. Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) led off the inning with a single and Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) hit her 10th homer of the year to put the Eagles ahead 2-1. FGCU was not done and loaded the bases later in the inning. Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.) drove in a pair of runs with a single to give the Eagles a 5-1 lead. The Pioneers answered with a single run in the top of the second. The Eagles scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 7-2 lead. In the top of the sixth, Post scored three runs on a three run homer by Shannon Kulnis to cut FGCU’s lead to 7-5. The Eagles rebounded in their half of the sixth with a three run shot of their own, courtesy of Jessica Rouse (Jacksonville, Fla.) to cap the scoring at 10-5. Rachel Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) kept her perfect record intact with her 11th straight win to begin the year. Paez went 2-for-3 with her 10th homer of the year while Rouse was 2-for-4 with her third homer of the season. The Eagles were able to put up 15 hits against the 13th ranked Pioneers. In the second game, FGCU again got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Homan walked to begin the inning and came home when Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) doubled. Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) singled to bring Jenks home and give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. That would prove to be all starter Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) would need as she limited Saginaw Valley State to just two hits to pick up her 11th win of the year. Frantz also fanned five batters in the game. Six different Eagles recorded hits in the game. FGCU will be back in action tomorrow night when they host Winona State at 5:00 pm at the FGCU Softball Complex.
