Softball Win Streak Reaches 21 Games

FORT MYERS, Fla., - The #16th ranked FGCU softball continued their winning streak with a doubleheader sweep (11-1, 6-0) of previously unbeaten Southern Connecticut State. The Eagles have now won 21 straight and are 40-3 while the Owls fall to 4-2. Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio) led off the second inning of game one with a single and scored on an RBI single by Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.). The Owls tied the score in the top of the fourth as Emily Atkinson doubled to bring home Lindsey Castano. The Eagles erupted for five runs in their half of the inning behind a grand-slam by LeeAnne McDowell (Arcadia, Fla.). The Eagles added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to take 7-1 lead. The Eagles ended the game in the sixth with a three-run homer by Miller to go up 11-1. Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) coasted to her 19th straight win, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing one run and a pair of hits. The Eagles won the second game 6-0 courtesy of the long ball also. Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) cleared the bases with a three-run blast in the second inning. Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) sent the next pitch over the fence to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead. The score would remain the same until the bottom of the sixth when Jennifer Marietta (Boynton Beach, Fla.) recorded her first hit as an Eagle, a solo homer to put FGCU up 6-0. Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) earned the win to move to 18-3, striking out seven batters while allowing only one hit. The Eagles will be back in action again on Thursday when they host New York Tech at 5:00 pm at the FGCU Softball Complex.
