Softball Sweeps Palm Beach Atlantic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The #12 FGCU Softball team swept Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, April 21, 2007 to improve their record to 56-6. Palm Beach Atlantic falls to 21-31. PBA took the lead early in game one in the top of the first with a two run homerun by Nikki Staten on two outs. The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with a two out single down the left field line by Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) to score Rachael Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.). The Eagles scored again in the bottom of the 6th on a single up the middle by Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio). Christa Piquette (Barrington, R.I.), who was on first pinch running for Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.), advanced to third on the hit and then scored on a throwing error by the centerfielder, Casey Gibson, bringing the score to 2-2. The Eagles put away the Sailfish in the bottom of the 8th with a double by Homan followed by a sacrifice bunt by Jenks to advance Homan to third. Paez then hit a double over the right fielder’s head to score Homan, ending the game in 8 innings with a score of 3-2. Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) picks up the win bringing her to a 26-1 record. Ashley Jones picks up the loss for PBA, falling to a 9-12 record. The Eagles ended the game with three runs on seven hits and no errors, while the Sailfish finished with two runs on 10 hits and one error. In game two, the Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the 3rd with a single to left center by Jenks, advancing Homan to second. Paez doubled, scoring both Homan and Jenks and advanced to third on the throw. Paez then scored on a sacrifice fly by Miller to put the Eagles ahead 3-0. The Sailfish scored two in the top of the 6th with a single up the middle by Candace Horton and a single to right field by Nikki Staten to put runners on first and second. Holly Elliott reached on a fielder’s choice, while Jordan Laria, who was pinch running for Staten, advanced to second on an error and Horton advanced to third. Andrea Fugate then walked, scoring Horton. With the bases loaded and one out, Danielle Perrotti grounded out advancing all the runners and scoring Laria and bringing the score to 4-2. The Sailfish then scored again in the top of the 7th, but it was not enough to take game two from the Eagles. Game two ended with a score of 4-3. FGCU finished with four runs on seven hits and one error while PBA finished with three runs on eight hits and one error. Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picks up the win improving her record to 25-4 with the save going to Edinger for her fifth save on the season. Andrea Fugate picks up the loss giving her a 10-12 record. Next, the Eagles go to West Palm Beach, Fla. to take on Northwood on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at 2:00 pm.
