VALDOSTA, Ga., FGCU's softball team continued to prolong the season after avenging an earlier loss to Rollins. The Eagles were sent to the losers bracket earlier in the tournament by Rollins but rebounded to win three straight and will now face Barry tomorrow at 1:00 pm. The Eagles improve to 61-7 with the 7-1 win while Rollins ends the season at 41-17.
The Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Jessica Gary (Naples, Fla.) led off with a single. Christa Piquette (Barrington, R.I.) attempted a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error by the Tars led to a run and Piquette on third with one out. The Tars were able to get out of the jam, but the Eagles had a 1-0 lead. The Tars answered in the top of the fourth with three consecutive singles to tie the score at one apiece.
The Eagles responded with Jessica Rouse's (Jacksonville, Fla.) 15th homer of the year to take a 3-1 lead. FGCU added a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Gary again led off with a single and stole second base. Rachel Homan (Vero Beach, Fla.) extended an 18 game hitting streak with a RBI single to score Gary.
FGCU tacked on three more runs in the sixth and were aided by a pair of Rollins errors. Piquette lifted a two-out single over the first baseman to score a pair of runs in the inning.
Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up her second win of the day, improving to 28-4 on the year. Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) and Gary were each 2-for-3 for the Eagles.
