No team had more wins last season without making the NCAA tournament than Florida Gulf Coast. Picked to finish sixth in their first season in the Atlantic Sun, and ineligible for postseason play after making the leap to Division I, the Eagles tied for the regular-season title with a 16-6 conference mark, part of a 48-16 record.

FGCU Softball Head Coach Dave Deiros has announced the hiring of Paige Jones as assistant softball coach. Jones joins the staff at FGCU after serving as an assistant for West Alabama.

FGCU softball head coach David Deiros announced that four players have signed National Letters of Intent to attend FGCU next fall and play for the 2009 Eagle softball team, which finished last season with a 48-16 record and tied for a share of the Atlantic Sun regular season championship.

After recently earning a share of the Atlantic Sun regular season championship the FGCU softball team placed two players on the NFCA Southeast All-Region Team as was announced Wednesday. Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year Carmen Paez earned first team honors along with junior Cheyenne Jenks.

The Atlantic Sun Conference office announced the 2008 softball awards and FGCUs Carmen Paez was named A-Sun Player of the Year. Her sister Jessica along with Cheyenne Jenks joined her on the first team while Morgan Campen and Courtney Platt earned All-Freshman team honors.

After rain and darkness halted a game in each of its weekend doubleheaders, the FGCU softball team (40-8, 8-0 A-Sun) was finally able to resume action on Sunday. The Eagles rallied and went on defeat Belmont 5-4 before picking up their seventh consecutive victory, when they defeated Lipscomb 13-2 in five innings.

In double-header action, the Eagles held off a late surge by the Bruins in game one to win, 10-7, before BU worked on another come back in game two, coming within one run, 4-3, before the game was halted due to heavy rain.

The Eagles dropped their final game of the USF Wilson Tournament 8-4 to Illinois on Sunday morning. The Eagles finished their opening weekend of play 2-3. Third baseman Cheyenne Jenks finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while second baseman Samantha Waldron went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Stetson, a team perennially near the top of the Atlantic Sun softball standings earned top billing from the conference coaches, edging out the 2007 regular-season champ Kennesaw State for the top spot in the 2008 preseason poll. The Hatters, who will host the Atlantic Sun Championship in May, overwhelmingly won the nod as the favorite to win the tournament.

FGCU Softball Head Coach Dave Deiros has announced the hiring of Ashley Spencer (Cecil) as assistant softball coach. Spencer rejoins the staff at FGCU after serving as an assistant for the Eagles from 2005-07, when she helped Eagles compile a 120-17 record over that span.
