FGCU Softball Hires Alumni Ashley Spencer as Assistant
FORT MYERS, Fla. - FGCU Softball Head Coach Dave Deiros has announced the hiring of Ashley Spencer (Cecil) as assistant softball coach. Spencer rejoins the staff at FGCU after serving as an assistant for the Eagles from 2005-07, when she helped the Eagles compile a 120-17 record over that span.
“Ashley did a fantastic job for us as a player and assistant coach,” said Deiros. “She has been with us since day one. She knows what is expected from the FGCU Softball and Athletics programs and she lives those ideals and can convey them easily to our players. Ashley possesses all the qualities necessary to be an exemplary coach. She is very knowledgeable about the game, specifically her playing skill sets of outfield defense, slapping and base running, for which I consider her an expert. She has a great understanding of the conditioning and strength training necessary to be successful at this level. Most importantly, she has earned the trust, confidence, and respect of our players, coaching staff, and administration. It gives me great pleasure to welcome her back to our staff.”
Spencer’s responsibilities will include working with the outfielders, monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes, serving as a player fitness liaison with the strength and conditioning coach and various other duties.
“I am really excited to be back with FGCU Athletics,” said Spencer. “It has been very exciting to be a part of this program from the inaugural season and I am looking forward to rejoining the team as we go D-I. The program has done a lot for me by allowing me to attain my degrees and still stay close to home and my family. I wish to thank the Physical Therapy program at FGCU for supporting my decision to return to FGCU Softball and still continue to pursue my academic goals. I can’t wait to get back on the field with the players and coaches.”
Spencer signed with UCF’s first Division I team in 2002. She transferred and played softball for FGCU from 2003-05 and served as the team’s starting Centerfielder and leadoff hitter. She holds numerous offensive and defensive records for FGCU including single season and career hits, triples, batting average, runs scored, stolen bases and outfielder assists. Spencer was FGCU’s first Division II All-American and Academic All-American in 2005 with a .408 batting average, 73 hits, 57 runs scored, 30 RBI, and 27 walks. She also won the National Golden Shoe Award with a NCAA Division II best 66 stolen bases.
Spencer was born and raised in Naples, Fla. and was a graduate of Lely High School in Naples. She played for Coach Deiros as a freshman in high school and also played travel ball for FGCU Assistant Coach Tom Thompson. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Performance from FGCU in 2005 and will graduate with her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from FGCU in the summer of 2008.
The Eagles open the 2008 season in Tampa, Fla. on Feb. 8 when they participate in the USF Best Western Tournament.
