TAMPA, Fla. - The FGCU softball team won one of two games on the opening day of the USF Best Western Tourney.

FGCU defeated Bethune-Cookman in game one, 6-0. Freshman Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla.) had a great collegiate debut finishing 3-for-3 and scored two runs. Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) gained the win as she pitched a complete game. Frantz pitched 7.0 innings, allowing only four hits. She struck out four batters along the way. All together the Eagles had 10 hits.

The second game of the evening was much closer as Florida Gulf Coast gave the No. 13/13 Gators a scare, but fell to Florida 6-4.

The Gators held a comfortable 4-0 lead going into the top of the fourth. Three straight Eagle hits loaded the bases with only one out in the inning. Samantha Waldron (Plant City, Fla.) drew a RBI walk. After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Platt was hit by a Stacey Nelson pitch to bring in another run. Another walk and FGCU brought in two more runs to tie the game at 4-4 with two outs. Nelson struck out the final batter of the half inning to end the Eagle rally.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Gators led off the inning with back-to-back base hits then executed a double steal to put both runners into scoring position. A sacrifice fly scored a runner and put Florida back in the lead 5-4.

Florida went on to add an insurance run in the sixth off of a double that hit off the right centerfield wall.

FGCU will return for day two of the USF Best Western Tourney tomorrow against tournament host, USF, and Memphis.
