Sam Waldron drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning.
BOCA RATON, FL - The FGCU softball team defeated Florida Atlantic 3-2 in the Championship Game of the Miken Classic on Sunday afternoon. The game was a rematch from Saturday night when the Eagles defeated the Owls 7-2. The Eagles have now won three of the five tournaments that they have participated in.
FAU got on the board first when Melissa Moore gave the Owls (14-12) a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a homerun to right field that also drove in Jessica Myers. FGCU answered quickly with a run in the bottom of the inning when Sam Waldron (Plant City, Fla.) drove in Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) with a single to right field. The Eagles tied the game in the third on a solo homerun by Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) The home run was Paez's third of the tourney and her 14th of the year.
The game was still tied in the bottom of the sixth when Waldron drove in Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) to give FGCU a 3-2 lead. Lauren Crandall reached base in the top of the seventh, but was left stranded as the Owls were retired.
Carmen Paez was named Tournament MVP.
