FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU softball team swept a double-header from Jacksonville on Senior Day. The Eagles are now 48-14 on the season and 16-4 in the A-Sun.
By sweeping JU, FGCU's magic number to win the Atlantic Sun Regular Season Championship is now 1. An Eagle win at Stetson on Tuesday or an USC Upstate loss at Mercer on Sunday will give the title.
"We are now a step closer to our third consecutive 50 win season and our first Atlantic Sun Conference Championship," said head coach Dave Deiros.
The Eagles took the first matchup from the Dolphins by a score of 12-3 (5 innings). Alisha Boyd (Naples, Fla.) finished 1-for-2 with a homerun and three RBI's. Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with one RBI. The nation's HR leader, Carmen Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.), drew four walks. Rachael Edinger (Lakeland, Fla.) picked up her 20th win.
FGCU knocked off Jacksonville in the second game by a score of 9-1 (6 innings). Jenks went 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Sam Waldron (Hartville, Ohio) finished 2-for-4 with three RBI's. Carmen Paez drew four walks in game, giving her eight total on the day. Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) picked up her 12th win of the season, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing three hits.
“What a great day for our senior class in their final home doubleheader," said Deiros. "Every one made a significant contribution in our wins. Rachael (Edinger) picked up the win in game one and is a 20-game winner for the third consecutive season. Even though Carmen (Paez) did not get a pitch to hit all day, she ran the bases extremely well and made three wonderful defensive plays. Roz (Tyre) continues to have productive at bats and ran the bases well. Alisha (Boyd) played her usually solid defense and hit the walk-off three run homer in game one.”
The Eagles will wrap-up the 2008 season and possibly the A-Sun Regular Season Championship on Tuesday evening when they head to DeLand, Fla. to take on the Hatters of Stetson in double-header action. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
