MACON, Ga., - The Atlantic Sun Conference office announced the 2008 softball awards and FGCU’s Carmen Paez was named A-Sun Player of the Year. Her sister Jessica along with Cheyenne Jenks joined her on the first team while Morgan Campen and Courtney Platt earned All-Freshman team honors.
Paez, a senior from Belle Glade, Fla., ranked among the NCAA leaders in most offensive categories including homeruns, batting average and RBI. In one season in the A-Sun, she cracked the top 10 in the record books in five different categories. For the season, she hit .425 with 22 homers, just four shy of an A-Sun single-season record, 68 RBI, and 76 runs scored. Her 22 home runs ranked third in the NCAA this season, which resulted in several teams pitching around her; she coaxed 84 walks, the fifth most in NCAA history. She had a .928 slugging percentage and an on base percentage of .638. Paez, one of the most decorated athletes at FGCU, and is also among 25 semifinalists for the NFCA Player of the Year award. She was one of two unanimous selections to the first team.
Jenks, a two-sport star from Naples, Fla., was the other unanimous selection. FGCU’s cleanup hitter leads the country in RBI with a new A-Sun record of 72. Jenks batted .398 during the season and belted 16 homeruns. Jenks has been a part of two Atlantic Sun Champions during FGCU’s first season in the league as she was also a member of the FGCU volleyball squad.
Jessica Paez, a junior from Belle Glade, Fla., had a tremendous season in her first as an Eagle. She hit .336 on the season and stole 22 bases on the year. She also hit 12 homers and drove in 46 runs while scoring 66 times. She hit 12 homeruns as well and had a .591 slugging percentage.
Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla.) and Morgan Campen (Rougemont, N.C.) were named to the All-Freshman team. Platt hit .298 on the season and scored 34 times. She drew 41 walks which was the second best total on the team. She started 61 of the 64 games this season. Campen posted a 16-3 mark in the circle with a 2.54 ERA to go with 111 strikeouts in 137.2 innings. She made 27 appearances with 19 starts and 13 complete games.
The Eagles finished the season with a 48-16 record overall and 16-6 Atlantic Sun mark. The Eagles shared the championship after being picked to finish sixth in the league.
