FORT MYERS, Fla. - FGCU softball head coach David Deiros announced that four players have signed National Letters of Intent to attend FGCU next fall and play for the 2009 Eagle softball team, which finished last season with a 48-16 record and tied for a share of the Atlantic Sun regular season championship.

The signees are SS Ashley Greene from Gibsonton. Fla., pitcher Catherine McDaniel from Melbourne, Fla., 1B Hayley O’Mara from Naples, Fla. and outfielder Lauren Ziegler from Palm Bay, Fla.

Greene is a recent graduate of East Bay High School. As a senior at East Bay she hit .412 with a .574 slugging percentage. Green also only committed two errors in 148 innings at short stop.

“Ashley is a versatile player with good strength and agility,” said Deiros. “She is a natural SS but can play a multitude of positions because of her athleticism.”

McDaniel comes to FGCU after playing two years at Florida Tech and Manatee Community College. She was named first team All-Conference, first team All-State and Florida Junior College Pitcher of the year in 2007. In 2008, McDaniel finished with a 3-4 record and a 1.17 ERA in 42 innings pitched at Florida Tech.

“Catherine is an excellent pitcher in the truest sense,” said Deiros. “She moves and locates the ball very effectively. She also has excellent command on all of her pitches. We are very fortunate to add her to our pitching staff.”

O’Mara is a transfer from Santa Fe Community College. The Naples High School graduate hit .373 in her two years playing first base for State Junior College Champion and National Runner-up Santa Fe.

“Hayley is a super competitor and has been winner everywhere she has played,” said Deiros. “She has very good hands and feet around first base. She is also a good contact hitter, which will make her a very tough out for opposing pitchers.”

Ziegler comes to FGCU from Brevard Community College. In 2007, she was named first team All-Conference, first team All-State and second team All-American after batting close to .500 and stealing 60 bases, which led the nation. In 2008, Ziegler was named first team All-Conference after hitting .422 and stealing 30 bases.

“Lauren has tremendous speed,” said Deiros. “She covers a considerable amount of ground in the outfield and wreaks havoc on the base paths. She will do a great job setting the table for our run producers.”

These four additions join fellow newcomers Alexis Casey, Lindsey Green and Cassidy Rash.
