TAMPA, Fla. - The FGCU softball team won a pair games at the USF Louisville Slugger Tourney on Saturday night.
FGCU defeated UNC Greensboro in game one, 8-5. After FGCU scored in the bottom of the first, the Eagles got a three-run home run from Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.) and a two-run blast from Samantha Waldron (Plant City, Fla.) in a seven-run second inning.
The Spartans would claw back into the contest, however, plating a pair of runs in the third and single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) nailed down her first save of the season.
Jenks was 2-for-3 in the game with a homerun and four RBI, while Waldron finished 2-for-3 with a homerun and a pair RBI.
Catherine McDaniel (2-0) picked up the win. McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) gave up four runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Frantz allowed an unearned run on one hit in 1.2 innings.
In game two, the Eagles shutout UNF 4-0 to improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Eagles jumped on the Ospreys early as they scored three runs through the first three innings. FGCU went on to add another run in the bottom of the fifth and went on to pick up the victory.
Jenks went 2-for-3 with a homerun and a pair of RBI.
Freshman Cassidy Rash (Crystal River, Fla.) picked up her first collegiate win and also her first collegiate shutout. Rash gave up four hits and struck out a pair of batters in 7.0 innings.
FGCU will return for the final day of the USF Louisville Slugger Tourney Sunday afternoon against USF at 1:30 p.m.
