Cat McDaniel pitched a one hit shutout against the Hoyas in Game 1.
MIAMI, Fla. - The FGCU softball team won a pair of games in the first day of the FIU Blue & Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament. The Eagles scored 20 runs on the day with wins over Georgetown and Michigan State.
The Eagles are now 5-2 on the season.
The Eagles handed Georgetown a 9-0 loss in their first game of the day. The Eagles struck quickly, scoring six runs in the first inning, as Samantha Waldron's (Plant City, Fla.) three-run triple put FGCU on the board. The Eagles would score three more runs, all coming from RBI doubles to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
Waldron would again get things started for FGCU in the bottom of the third, leading off with a double. Jessica Carter's (Ocala, Fla.) triple would drive her in, before Carter scored on a balk. The Eagles added one more run in the fourth inning to take an insurmountable nine run advantage.
Junior Cat McDaniel (Melbourne, Fla.) picked up her third win of the season, giving up only one hit and picking up her first shutout as an Eagle. She also struck out three batters in the win.
Game two of the afternoon proved to be tougher for the Eagles. Down 6-5 heading into the top of the sixth inning, FGCU scored six runs, including a three-run HR from Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.), and went on to defeat Michigan State, 11-7, in their second game of the day. Jenks finished 2-for-5 with a HR and three RBI. Christa Piquette (Barrington, R.I.) went 3-for-4 with a HR and three RBI. Freshman Cassidy Rash (Crystal River, Fla.) picked up her second win of the season, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up three hits, while striking out a pair of batters.
The Eagles will be in action for the second day of the FIU Blue & Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament when they face Temple and St. John's.
