FORT MYERS, Fla. - Samantha Waldron drove in the winning run as the FGCU softball team defeated Michigan State 6-5 on day three of the FGCU Spring Break Tourney.
The Eagles are now 11-4 on the season.
The Eagles handed Michigan State a 6-5 loss (nine innings) in the final game of the FGCU Spring Break Tourney. The Eagles struck quickly, scoring three runs through the first two innings, as State's pitcher walked three FGCU batters and had two errors to begin the game.
Michigan State never backed down and eventually took the lead after putting five runs up on the board in the third inning.
The Eagles got back in the game when Hayley O'Mara (Naples, Fla.) was walked with the bases loaded and Courtney Platt (Naples, Fla.) came in to score, cutting the Spartans lead down to one.
FGCU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and sent the game into extra innings thanks to Platt's double that scored Cheyenne Jenks (Naples, Fla.).
Starting pitcher Dana Frantz (Brighton, Mich.) shut down the MSU offense in the eighth and ninth innings, which allowed Waldron to deliver the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth. After Jessica Paez (Belle Glade, Fla.) doubled to left center and Jenks drew the unintentional intentional walk, Waldron stepped up and knocked a single to right center to give the Eagles the 6-5 win.
The victory was FGCU's first come-from-behind win of the season.
Frantz picked up her second win of the season after pitching 9.0 innings and striking out seven batters.
The Eagles will be in action on Feb. 24 when they host a double-header against Eastern Michigan. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
